The beautiful New Forest National Park provides lots of opportunities for exploring the great outdoors and Brockenhurst provides an ideal gateway. Explore the area on two wheels with the help of Cyclexperience. Here you can rent a variety of bikes from their shop, located at Brockenhurst station, before embarking on the 8 mile Brockenhurst to Rhinefield circular route.
Around the village of Brockenhurst, you’ll find Watersplash. This is a meeting point of two of the area’s steams which eventually lead onto the Lymington River. You can often find animals drinking from this watering hole, including the famous New Forest ponies.
Lymington’s postion on the coast lends itself to idylic boat trips, setting sail from the quayside. See the scenery from a different perspective as you enjoy views of the marina and out towards the Solent and the Isle of Wight.
Walking
From Brockenhurst, walkers can pick up the South Food Trail, taking in 8 miles to Burley, with plenty of suggestions for rest bites in the form of tea rooms and pubs.
If you enjoy walking then a bracing walk along the 10 miles of nearby Lymington to Keyhaven nature reserve is a must. Look out for wetland birds, take in views of The Needles on the Isle of Wight and breathe in the fresh, salty air.
History & heritage
Take time to discover the St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery in Lymington which is situated in an old Victorian school building. Here you’ll be taken on a journey back in time as you explore the history of the area from the age of William the Conqueror to World War II. Be sure to check what temproary exhibitions are on when you visit.
Head to the Royal Lymington Yacht Club to find the famous sea water baths which date back to 1833. These are the oldest sea water baths in Britain and are a popular addition to the town in the summer months with swimming and inflatable fun making this a must-visit attraction for families.
On a budget
The Lymington to Brockenhurst line is a short route and so it has a lower ticket price than longer routes. Take advantage of the smaller fares, pack a picnic and explore some of the wide open spaces the New Forest National Park has to offer for a more budget-friendly day out.
