Wickford – Southend

Journey through Essex market towns as you travel along the Southend Line ending at this traditional seaside town.

History & heritage

After departing the market town of Wickford, your next stop is Rayleigh Station. Leave the train here to explore National Trust Rayleigh Mount, less than 10 minutes walk from the station. Once home to a Norman Castle, today visitors can walk around where the castle once stood and explore the nearby Rayleigh Windmill.

Scenic views

Further along the line, as you approach Southend Airport, you may have chance for some plane spotting from the train, as the railway skirts the end of the runway.

Next stop is Prittlewell Station, where you can take a short 10 minute walk to the 12th century Prittlewell Priory.

Back on the train and the last stop is Southend Victoria Station. Leave the station and walk 15 minutes through the town centre to reach the coast.

Family fun

Southend boasts over seven miles of sandy beaches including three blue flag beaches. Thrill seekers will love Adventure Island, an amusement park located on the seafront.

Nearby you can take a walk along Southend Pier, the longest leisure pier in the world at 1.33 miles (2km) from the shore. Want to rest your legs? Take the Pier Train that runs frequently throughout the day.
