South Fylde Line

Preston – Blackpool South

Leave the bustling city of Preston behind and you’ll shortly be travelling through picturesque Lancashire countryside as you journey along the South Fylde line.

Scenic views

The South Fylde Line offers a charming 22-mile journey from Preston to Blackpool South, passing through lush countryside, historic towns, and the iconic Fylde Coast. As the train leaves the urban bustle behind, passengers are treated to views of open farmland, salt marshes, and the shimmering Irish Sea.

History & heritage

The South Fylde Line is steeped in local history. Step off at Lytham to explore Lytham Hall, a stunning Georgian manor set in 78 acres of parkland. The town itself is rich in Victorian architecture and maritime heritage. At St Annes, discover the story behind the town’s name at the historic Parish Church of St Anne, and stroll past Edwardian villas and the elegant Victorian pier.

Outdoors & Nature

Nature lovers will find plenty to enjoy along the South Fylde Line. Fairhaven Lake is a must-visit –  a peaceful spot for boating, birdwatching, and family picnics, with views across to the Ribble Estuary. The Promenade Gardens in St Annes offer a colourful, floral escape, while the flat coastal paths between Lytham and St Annes are perfect for walking or cycling. For a wilder experience, explore the sand dunes and nature reserves near Squires Gate and Blackpool South.

Family fun

Calling all adrenaline junkies, get straight into the heart of the action as you leave the train at Blackpool Pleasure Beach station.

Looking for a more relaxing day out? Get off the train at St Annes-on-the-Sea and enjoy exploring the delights of this charming seaside town. Don’t miss the traditional arcades located on the beautiful Victorian Pier.

Step free

Preston station, Lytham, St Annes and Blackpool South railway stations all provide step free access. Access onto the train from some of the stations may be by ramp. Leave the train at Lytham or St Annes and enjoy a flat pathway straight to the sea front where you can access the promenade.

Please note along the South Fylde Line there is no step free access from Squires Gate station and limited step free access to the platform at Salwick station.
