This line is a visual treat from start to finish. As the train climbs out of Middlesbrough and into the moorland, passengers are greeted with sweeping views of heather-covered hills, especially vibrant in late summer, wooded valleys and winding rivers, including the River Esk, which the line follows to the sea and charming stone-built villages like Danby, Glaisdale, and Grosmont, each nestled in peaceful countryside.

The final stretch into Whitby offers a dramatic arrival into the historic seaside town, with glimpses of the Abbey ruins and the North Sea beyond.

History & heritage

The Esk Valley Railway is steeped in industrial and rural heritage. Grosmont Station is a living museum, shared with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, where steam trains often pass through. The line itself was once part of a network serving ironstone mines and rural communities, with many original station buildings still in use. Whitby, the line’s eastern terminus, is rich in maritime history, literary connections (think Dracula!), and Victorian seaside charm.

Walking

The Esk Valley Railway is a walker’s paradise, with easy access to trails from many stations:

• The Esk Valley Walk follows the river from Castleton to Whitby, offering a mix of woodland, farmland, and moorland paths.
• Glaisdale to Grosmont is a popular section, passing through the beautiful Egton Bridge and the ancient Beggar’s Bridge.
• Danby is home to the Moors National Park Centre, a great starting point for family-friendly walks and nature trails.

With trains running in both directions, it’s easy to plan a linear walk and return by rail.
