We're not just about trains. This month we're getting on board for Catch the Bus Month to showcase how you can explore further when you combine your adventure with trains and buses.

We've included some suggestions below on how you can discover even more of Britain's hidden gems with accessible, sustainable journeys this autumn.

Step back in time to the Roman Empire

Take a scenic rail journey, along the Tyne Valley Line, from the bright lights of Newcastle, following the River Tyne. Leave the train at either Hexham or Haltwhistle and step onboard the AD122 bus. This Hadrian's Wall Country Bus makes it easy to explore the area's Roman heritage set amongst some of the country's most stunning landscapes. Visit amazing attractions and walk part of the Hadrian's Wall path hopping on and off the bus to help you get around.

Picture-perfect views in the Peak District

Grab your camera and sit by the window as you journey along the Hope Valley Line, from Manchester Piccadilly (or from Sheffield) to the rural station of Edale. From here you can join the Peak Pathfinder (number 62) bus connecting visitors with the charming village of Castleton, in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Overlooked by Mam Tor, the village is popular for its show caves, rich history and for the many walking trails in the area.

Highlights of the Highlands

Journey along the stunning Highland Main Line connecting Glasgow and Edinburgh with Perth and Inverness. Leave the train at Aviemore, a popular place known for its natural beauty and outdoor pursuits, and join the Aviemore Adventurer (number 30 bus). This hourly service takes you through the beautiful Scottish landscapes as you make your way to the Cairngorm Mountain. Here you can take the mountain's funicular railway for a unique way to experience the panoramic views from the mountain. Guided walks, hiking trails and a prime skiing and snowboarding location makes the area perfect to explore throughout the year.

A tale of two castles in Wales

Considered to be one of the most scenic train journeys in Britain, the Cambrian Coast Line should definitely be on your must-do list. Beyond the train at Criccieth, you can spend time exploring the impressive castle ruins, offering amazing views over the sea and town, before catching the bus to Caernarfon. Home to the iconic Caernarfon Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the town is steeped in medieval heritage, offering a glimpse into Wales' fascinating history. Here you an also pick up the heritage railway, Welsh Heritage Railway, heading back to Porthmadog where you can pick up Cambrian Coast Line again.

Scenic South Downs

Have more adventures in the South Downs National Park as you take a trip on the South Downs Rambler bus, operating every Sunday until 15 September 2024. This scenic bus connects Winchester and Petersfield railway stations and delivers you to charming villages and beautiful landscapes. Explore further with a trip along the East Hampshire Line, connecting at Petersfield or Southampton to Winchester.
