Mindful miles – wellbeing walks by train
Sometimes the best way to slow down is to let the train take the strain and take a few mindful miles. This autumn, as part of our Tracks and Trails campaign we’re celebrating the simple pleasure of combining rail travel with walking, wheeling and exploring the outdoors. Whether it’s a gentle stroll through a historic market town, a coastal hike with sea views, or a countryside adventure linking stations and communities, travelling by train makes it easier to leave the car behind and enjoy a greener, more mindful day out.
Walking and wheeling from the railway
Community rail partnerships and station groups across Britain have long championed the connection between rail travel and wellbeing. Their local knowledge, walking and wheeling routes, and visitor information help people discover hidden gems, support local businesses and enjoy sustainable adventures right from the station platform.
Meanwhile, the Conwy Valley and North Wales Coast Community Rail Partnership highlights routes through some of Wales’ most spectacular scenery. Travellers can combine rail journeys with walks alongside the River Conwy, explore the edges of Snowdonia National Park, or enjoy coastal paths offering views across the Irish Sea. The railway itself is part of the experience, travelling through landscapes of mountains, forests and historic market towns.

Over in the Darent Valley, you can explore the Samuel Palmer Trail for an immersive audio-visual route inspired by the celebrated landscape artist. Alongside this is an impressive collection of 17 rail-linked trails that encourage discovery of local landscapes, food and drink, heritage, and independent shops by train and on foot.
In North Kent, visitors can explore the Swale area’s network of walking, wheeling and cycling routes, taking in coastal marshes, nature reserves, historic towns, and waterside paths. Arriving by rail makes it easy to enjoy routes around Sittingbourne, Faversham and the Isle of Sheppey, where wildlife-rich landscapes and far-reaching estuary views provide the perfect setting for a mindful day outdoors.
Along the Robin Hood Line in Nottinghamshire, trains connect communities surrounded by woodland, countryside and former mining heritage. The community rail partnership promotes a range of rail-linked walking and cycling routes, including opportunities to explore Sherwood Forest, local country parks and green spaces that showcase the area’s natural and industrial heritage.
The North Downs Line offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and reconnect with the outdoors. Enjoy a section of the iconic North Downs Way with a walk from the railway to the stunning viewpoints of Box Hill, or explore the tranquil landscapes of the Blackwater Valley.

Station-to-station adventures
One of the great advantages of taking the train is the opportunity to start and finish in different places. Station-to-station walks remove the need for circular routes and open up a wealth of possibilities.
The Haywards Heath to Balcombe Trail offers a perfect example. This 9.6km route takes walkers through rolling Sussex countryside, around tranquil reservoirs and past welcoming cafés and pubs before arriving at another railway station ready for the journey home.
Similarly, the Downham Market Town Trail provides a shorter circular route beginning and ending at the station. At 4.8km, it’s ideal for those looking for a relaxed walk that combines local history, nature and opportunities to support independent businesses along the way.
For those looking to clear their head and immerse themselves in nature, The Bentham Line Rail to Trail routes in the Yorkshire Dales and Lancashire countryside, offer the perfect escape. Easily reached via train, these walks lead visitors through some of northern England’s most beautiful countryside, where peaceful landscapes, fresh air and expansive views help create a sense of calm and wellbeing.

Seaside walks and coastal escapes
There’s something about the coast that is so refreshing. The sound of the waves, the salty sea air and the wide-open views can help clear the mind, reduce stress and leave you feeling refreshed. Whether it’s a brisk walk along a clifftop path or a gentle stroll beside the shoreline, a day by the sea offers the perfect opportunity to slow down, switch off and enjoy some mindful miles.
Brighton is a great example of a destination where rail and walking go hand in hand. Just a short walk from the station, visitors can explore the city’s iconic seafront, wander the historic Lanes or head up onto the South Downs for spectacular views across the coast. From gentle beachfront strolls to longer countryside routes, Brighton offers plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs and enjoy the restorative benefits of being beside the sea.
Further west, the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership highlights a range of walks showcasing some of Britain’s most dramatic coastal scenery. Travelling along community rail routes such as the scenic Tamar Valley Line or Tarka Line opens up opportunities to explore estuaries, beaches and sections of the South West Coast Path, with stunning sea views waiting around every corner. Or why not join a guided fossil walk around Lyme Regis, learning about millions of years of geological history while enjoying fresh sea air and stunning scenery?
Along the Cumbrian Coast Line, travellers can enjoy some of England’s most underrated coastal scenery. Stations along the route provide access to beaches, dramatic sea views and walking routes through towns and villages that have grown up alongside the railway.
On the Esk Valley Line, travellers can combine rail journeys with walks around the North York Moors and Yorkshire coast. The route links communities between Middlesbrough and Whitby, allowing visitors to explore coastal paths, harbour views and sweeping moorland landscapes without relying on a car.
